Des Moines, IA — November 8, 2018, one person was injured and another is at large following an accident where a cement truck hit a van and a house, after which the driver fled.
Des Moines Police officials reported that the accident happened at around 11:30 a.m. off the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Cottage Grove.
In their reports, police say that the Ready Mix USA cement truck apparently ran multiple red lights before colliding with a van at the intersection. The truck then hopped the curb, ran off-road, and crashed into the side of a house. The driver of the truck reportedly got out on foot and fled the scene.
One person from the van required transportation to a local hospital for injuries said to be serious. No one in the house was injured.
Police say they’re continuing to look for the driver who has yet to be identified.
Map of the Area
This series of events is nothing short of unusual, to say the least. The question to ask is pretty clear: why did the driver run? Most of the time, people don’t run because of the crash itself. It’s usually because there are other things they don’t want police to find out about–drugs, alcohol, warrants, expired license, etc. So is that what happened here? No one can say for sure until police catch the driver, which fortunately tends to happen when the driver leaves their vehicle behind–especially a commercial vehicle. Hopefully with more thorough and persistent investigations, those affected by this wreck get a chance to confront the person responsible for their injuries.
