Jimmie Mellon Killed in Gastonia, NC, Delivery Truck Accident

Gastonia, NC -- May 12, 2017, Jimmie Mellon was fatally injured after an accident where he was hit by a delivery truck while walking along the highway.

Investigating authorities say the accident happened just after 3:30 a.m. along the eastbound lanes of US Highway 74 just north of Crowders Mountain Park.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Mellon and another man were walking along the side of the highway after their vehicle ran out of gas. Mellon was reportedly on his phone at the time. As he was walking, a passing bread delivery truck passed close by him, and the side mirror struck Mellon in the head.

Mellon reportedly died at the scene. His companion was not injured. Police did not report any charges or citations after the accident.
