Fire Chief Kevin Sutton Killed in Birmingham, AL, Truck Accident

Birmingham, AL -- April 30, 2017, Fairfield Fire Chief Kevin Sutton was killed after an accident where his vehicle was hit head-on by an 18-wheeler.

Birmingham Police investigators reported that the accident took place at around 2:50 p.m. near the 4th Avenue South exit along I-59.

Preliminary reports indicate that Chief Sutton was driving a vehicle northbound along I-59. In his vehicle were his wife, Phyllis, and his daughter, 26-year-old Tabitha Normal. As they traveled, a southbound 18-wheeler somehow lost control and ran across the median. It entered northbound lanes and crashed into Sutton's SUV head-on.

Sutton was fatally injured in the crash and died at the scene. Normal was taken to a hospital with critical injuries while Phyllis Sutton received treatment for non-critical injuries.

Police did not say what factors contributed to the accident. No additional details were released.
