Ryan Wyatt Injured in Tyler, TX, Truck Accident

Tyler, TX -- May 19, 2017, Ryan Wyatt was injured as the result of an accident in which he was struck by a pickup in a crosswalk.

Tyler Police investigators were called out to the scene of the accident just after 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Loop 323 and Old Henderson Highway.

According to preliminary information, 52-year-old Wyatt, in a motorized wheelchair, was traveling southbound along the side of Old Henderson when he attempted to cross Loop 323, reportedly in a crosswalk at the time. As he did so, 26-year-old Jose Trevizo was driving a pickup hauling a large trailer. He attempted to turn onto Loop 323, somehow failing to see Wyatt in time.

The pickup struck Wyatt in the crosswalk, inflicting serious injuries. Wyatt was transported to East Texas Medical Center for treatment.

Trevizo stayed at the scene to assist investigators. It's unclear if any charges or citations were filed. Investigations are ongoing.

Map of the Area

It should go without saying that there needs to be a thorough investigation into exactly what caused this accident to happen. From what I can tell, the intersection at which this occurred doesn't really have any visual obstructions that would affect drivers. Additionally, the victim was in a motorized wheelchair, meaning it's highly unlikely he dashed out in front of the pickup without any sort of warning. Most motorized wheelchairs simply aren't fast enough for that to happen. And to top it all off, the victim was in a crosswalk.

Now I don't want to speculate without having all of the facts, but this seems to be an accident which easily could have been avoided. The driver of the pickup should have had plenty of time and ability to see the victim crossing. These sorts of accidents often happen, among other things, due to inattentive driving, intoxication, and speeding. Reports are even saying witnesses saw the pickup speeding leading up to the accident. This could be true, but without a closer investigation, there's no way to be sure.

Ultimately, those affected by this accident deserve to know the full story and have the opportunity they deserve to pursue justice for their pains. Having the accident looked at by an experienced professional can help ensure that crucial evidence surrounding the incident is brought to light and preserved. That way, the evidence can be utilized as a tool to ensure those responsible for the accident are held accountable for their actions.
