1 Killed, 5 Injured in Hidalgo County, TX, Car Accident on US 281

Hidalgo County, TX -- March 12, 2017, one person was killed and five others were injured following an accident where two cars crashed on US 281.

The Texas Department of Public Safety was called to investigate the fatal, two-vehicle accident. They say it happened near the intersection of US Highway 281 and Red Gate Area.

Preliminary accident reports indicate that a Buick Regal was somehow traveling the wrong direction down US 281. As a result, it crossed paths with an oncoming Ford Expedition in northbound lanes. This resulted in a head-on collision.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly afterward. They say the driver of the Buick died at the scene of the crash. Four people from the SUV were taken to hospitals via ground ambulance with unspecified injuries. A child from the SUV had to be airlifted from the scene for treatment. His injuries also were not specified.

Authorities have yet to determine what factors contributed to this accident. They say the crash is still under investigation.
