Michael Merkle Killed in Reading, PA, 18-wheeler Accident

Reading, PA -- February 28, 2017, Michael Merkle suffered fatal injuries after an accident where his vehicle and an 18-wheeler collided.

Muhlenberg Township authorities reported that the collision occurred around midnight at the intersection of Route 61 and Water Street.

Preliminary investigations indicated that 19-year-old Merkle was traveling westbound on Water Street. He attempted to turn onto southbound Route 61, and his vehicle crossed paths with an oncoming 18-wheeler. The two vehicles collided in the intersection. Both vehicles veered off-road as a result.

Merkle suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a local trauma center. He died later that night. A passenger from his vehicle sustained only minor injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

Authorities did not say what particular factors contributed to the accident. They have not released any additional details at this time.
