Decatur, TX -- February 15, 2017, Nickolas Koetter was seriously injured following an accident in which his vehicle crashed off-road.

Investigators from the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the single-vehicle accident scene at about 6:00 a.m.

According to their preliminary reports, 31-year-old Koetter was driving a Chevy Z71 pickup southbound along FM 51, just south of Decatur. For reasons not yet confirmed, near the intersection of South Meadows Drive, Koetter's vehicle drifted off of the roadway and went into the grass. It then collided head-on into a tree and came to a halt.

Emergency services came to the scene, and they transported Koetter to a hospital in Decatur. Due to his injuries, he was eventually flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth for further treatment.

Authorities say that Koetter likely fell asleep at the wheel, but these reports have not been confirmed. Investigations are still ongoing.
