Bake Bannister Dead, Steven Ray Hurt in Hutchinson Co., TX, Accident

Hutchinson County, TX -- February 5, 2017,Bake Bannister was killed, Steven Ray injured, following an accident where their vehicles crashed head-on.

Investigators from the Texas Department of Public Safety report that the accident occurred north of Amarillo along Texas Highway 136.

Their reports indicate that 25-year-old Bannister was traveling southbound on the highway while 39-year-old Ray was in the northbound lanes. For reasons that are unclear, the two vehicles crossed paths with each other, causing a head-on collision.

Both drivers sustained critical injuries. Bannister's injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Ray was taken to a nearby hospital via helicopter where he was said to be in critical condition.

Authorities have not yet determined what factors contributed to the fatal accident. They say the crash remains under investigation.
