Trucker Injured in Smith Co., TX, 18-wheeler Explosion Accident

Smith County, TX -- January 23, 2017, a truck driver sustained serious injuries following an accident where his 18-wheeler crashed off I-20 and exploded.

The Smith County Sheriff's Department responded to the accident scene at around 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of I-20 and Us Highway 271.

According to initial investigations, a man was driving an 18-wheeler eastbound on the interstate at the time. His cargo was not specified. As he drove along the highway, the truck somehow lost control and veered off the roadway.

Once off the highway, the truck went into a skid before eventually overturning. This caused an explosion to occur which engulfed the truck.

The driver of the truck was able to leave the vehicle before the flames became too intense. EMS rushed to the scene,a nd he was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

At this time, authorities are not sure what caused the explosion to occur nor whether or not the truck's cargo exacerbated the situation.

No further information has been released.
