Maricela, Maribel Reyes Killed, Michael Escobedo Charged in Hargill, TX, Accident

Hargill, TX -- January 14, 2017, Maricela and Maribel Reyes were killed following an accident where their vehicle was struck head-on by Michael Escobedo.

According to Hidalgo County authorities, the accident occurred along FM 490 at around 7:40 a.m.

Their preliminary investigations indicate that 30-year-od Escobedo was traveling northbound on the road. As the vehicle entered a curve in the road, it reportedly drifted over the center line into oncoming traffic. As a result, it crashed head-on with a southbound car.

Both 40-year-old Maricela and 30-year-old Maribel, sisters, were back seat passengers in the car that was hit. They sustained fatal injuries, and both died later on in hospitals. The driver of their vehicle had non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Following the accident, police placed Escobedo under arrest. He is currently being charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident.
