Child Killed in Houston, TX, Rear-end Accident on I-45
Houston, TX -- January 7, 2017, an 8-year-old child was killed as the result of an accident where a car was rear-ended by an SUV on I-45.
The fatal accident took place near the intersection of the North Freeway and Airtex Boulevard at around 8:00 p.m.
According to police reports, Selena Villarreal was driving a car down I-45 when it experienced some sort of breakdown and began to slow. Villarreal reportedly pulled over until the car came to a stop in the right traffic lane. She turned on her hazard lights, and sometime later, the car was rear-ended by a Toyota Rav4.
Villarreal's son was in the back seat during the crash, and he sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to Texas Children's Hospital for intensive care, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries. It's unclear if any other injuries occurred.
Authorities confirmed that the child was wearing a seatbelt at the time. It's still unclear what caused the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
