Authorities said that 22-year-old Selena Cruz was the driver of a Mercedes-Benz going southbound on F.M. 551. On a curve, the vehicle went off the side of the road where it hit a culvert and overturned in the ditch. Due to this, Cruz had incapacitating injuries, authorities said. Right now, the exact cause of the crash can't be confirmed.

Believe it or not, single-vehicle wrecks are some of the more complex ones when it comes to investigations. It isn't necessarily that they're always caused by things that are particularly difficult to investigate. Folks usually assume that the driver was going too fast, was on their phone, or was intoxicated. Those are all common, but the challenge is making sure to rule out other, less common factors. Unfortunately, authorities aren't always equipped to handle that.

I always go back to the infamous ignition switch defect scandal GM had years ago. It was a defect that could leave drivers suddenly without power, meaning they lost things like anti-lock braking, power steering, and even their airbags. It led to over a hundred people losing their lives. Yet no one knew about the issue for years. It was only after many independent investigators eventually connected the dots that the defect was brought to light and the company held accountable.

For all those people that were victims of that defect, how many people just assumed they were being reckless when in reality they had no way of avoiding the crash? That's not to suggest anything like that happened here, but it's important to keep these things in mind rather just jumping to conclusions.
