The Impala was entering I.H. 20 from the on ramp when, for unknown reasons, the Impala failed to safely merge; instead it continued across all of the eastbound lanes and struck the wire barrier; the collision with the barrier caused the vehicle to overturn, rolling into the westbound lanes where it was struck by an oncoming 18-wheeler containing Luis Flores—age 69—and Angelina Romero—age 52. The three victims all incurred serious injuries and were transported to a local medical facility by emergency medical services for treatment. Romero and Cardona, however, both died as a result of their injuries, having been declared deceased at the hospital. Flores's condition is reportedly stable.

The cause of the accident has not been confirmed; it is still under active investigation by local authorities. The weather and road conditions in the area at the time of the accident were reportedly clear and dry. There are no additional details available at this point in time.
