For unknown reasons, the Ford veered right and off of the roadway, colliding with the back of an 18-wheeler which had been parked beside the shoulder of the interstate. Both the trailer and the Ford began to catch fire. The driver of the 18-wheeler was able to detach the cab from the trailer and drive it forward to an area which was a safe distance from the burning vehicles. Debris from the initial collision was flung out into the eastbound lanes of traffic and struck a Chevy Equinox which had been traveling in the left-hand lane; the Equinox suffered tire damage and came to a stop on the exit ramp ahead.

The driver of the Ford—whose identity has not been confirmed—suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident and was transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services. Their condition has not been made public. There were no other injuries reported in connection with this incident. The accident is still under investigation.
