Rodrigues was reportedly outside of the minivan for unknown reasons. Two 18-wheelers were traveling down the left-hand lane; the first successfully veered to the right in order to avoid colliding with Rodrigues and his minivan. The second, however, was unsuccessful in avoiding the collision and struck both Rodrigues and his vehicle. The collision with Rodrigues and his minivan caused the 18-wheeler to strike the nearby guardrail before coming to a stop. The 18-wheeler was reportedly partway over the side of the embankment.

Authorities report that Rodrigues was killed as a result of the accident, having been declared deceased at the scene. The incident is still under investigation. No additional details are available at this time.
