Geri Lynn Russell, Erik Esquivel Killed, 1 Injured in Wrong Way Accident on I-20 in Fort Worth, TX
UPDATE (October 12, 2023): Tarrant County officials have identified the individuals killed in the crash as 62-year-old Geri Lynn Russell and 27-year-old Erik Esquivel. Right now, circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation, but the current fact pattern raises all too familiar red flags.
To be rather blunt, it's incredibly unusual for someone in their right state of mind to continue driving the wrong direction on a divided roadway long enough to hit someone head on. Consider all of the "Wrong Way" signs, red reflectors, and potentially even headlights one would have to pass without realizing their mistake. That's why it often comes to light that the driver was significantly intoxicated and didn't realize what they were doing.
A while back, for example, I handled a wrongful death case against a bar here in DFW which involved a drunk driver who turned the wrong way down a service road, went up a tollway exit ramp, then began driving against traffic. Dallas PD got several calls about the driver, but before they could resolve the situation, the wrong way driver hit a family's car head-on, killing a teenager and seriously injuring others. The whole thing happened right after the drunk driver left the bar. In that instance, authorities pursued criminal charges against the bartender. If this accident has a similar underlying cause, I hope they do the same thing.
