13-Year-Old Killed in Pedestrian-Car Accident on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, NY

Shirley, NY — September 9, 2023, a 13-year-old was injured in a collision with a police cruiser around 8 p.m. at William Floyd Parkway and Adobe Drive in Shirley.

Officials report the 13-year-old was crossing William Floyd Parkway at the intersection with Adobe Dr. on a bicycle when he was struck by a southbound police cruiser. According to authorities, the police officer was driving through the intersection with the lights and siren on and unsuccessfully attempted to swerve to avoid a collision. The police car struck the teenager, two cars stopped in traffic, and a small tree.

Investigators released that the police officer was responding to an "elderly woman in medical distress."

The 13-year-old bicyclist was reportedly rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries but succumbed to the injuries on Monday, September 11.

Authorities have not released any other details at this time.
