James Thompson, Jr. Killed, Officer Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident in Ocala, FL

Ocala, FL — August 26, 2023, James Thompson, Jr. was killed, and an officer was injured in a hit-and-run crash at South Pine Avenue and Southwest 17th Street in Ocala, FL.

Authorities indicate that on August 26, a fatal collision occurred when three vehicles collided in Ocala. According to reports, the crash happened shortly before 10:30 at night. Police say a vehicle traveling east along Southwest 17th Street struck a pedestrian and a parked patrol car while going through the intersection.

Investigators say the vehicle fled the scene, which prompted the officer to pursue. Sources say the vehicle crashed head-on into the police car, severely injuring the officer.

Officials confirmed the pedestrian, James Thompson, Jr., 26, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The police officer reportedly sustained serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition.

The driver who fled the scene, Kristopher Kent Winningham, 44, was killed in the crash.
