Teen Injured in Loose Truck Wheel Accident on I-80/94 in Lake County, IN

Lake County, IN — August 15, 2023, a teenager was injured following a loose truck wheel accident at around 10:30 a.m. on I-80/94.

Investigators with the Indiana State Police were called out to the eastbound lanes of I-80/94 west of the Calumet Avenue interchange.

According to current information, the incident happened as a 15-year-old and others were fixing a flat tire along the shoulder of the interstate. While there, it appears that a wheel came loose from a commercial truck—rim and tire together. The wheel bounced onto the shoulder where it struck the 15-year-old and multiple others reportedly outside the vehicle.

The 15-year-old was taken to a hospital with injuries described as potentially life-threatening. Others involved were said to have less severe injuries. Right now, details about how the wheel came loose are still under investigation. Authorities have yet to give additional statements.
