It appears from statements that 42-year-old Biniam Afewerki was in a Kenworth tractor-trailer traveling along the interstate. Ahead, investigators believe that another commercial truck hit something in the road, causing it to go airborne. The object smashed through Afewerki's windshield, hitting him and causing the truck to lose control.

The truck veered out of its lane where it then crashed into a pole along the median. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Afewerki succumbed to fatal injuries as a result of the crash. There were no other confirmed injuries. Right now, the source of the object in the road remains undetermined.
