8-Year-Old Killed, Stephanie Ritchey, 2 Injured in Truck Accident in Hillsboro, TX

Hillsboro, TX — April 27, 2023, an 8-year-old was killed, and another 8-year-old and two adults were injured by loose semi-truck tires around 3:23 p.m. on I-35 in Hillsboro.

According to authorities a Freightliner semi-truck and its trailer were southbound on I-35 when the trailer's 4th axle on the passenger side experienced barring failure. This caused the trailer's dual tires and hub to separate from the semi, continue southbound, drift across all southbound lanes, strike the concrete barrier, jump the barrier, and enter northbound traffic.

Ms. Ritchey's Cadillace Escalade reportedly attempted an evasive maneuver but was still struck on the rear driver-side door. The collision purportedly sent the Escalade partially into the right shoulder separating the main highway from the on-ramp just before Exit 364A.

The tires reportedly continued in the northbound lane and collided with three other vehicles, but officials say no one was injured in these vehicles.

Officials report Stephanie Ritchey, an adult passenger, and an 8-year-old passenger suffered possible injuries. A second 8-year-old passenger was fatally injured.
