Kaufman County, TX -- March 5, 2023, Juan Cordova Jr. and another person were injured after an accident where their vehicle flipped.

Investigators said that the incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. along County Road 346 in the area of County Road 344.

Officials said that 49-year-old Juan Cordova Jr. was a passenger in a Polaris RZR that was rounding a curve along CR 346. While rounding the curve, the vehicle lost control and flipped over.

Due to the crash, Cordova had incapacitating injuries. The driver was said to have non-life-threatening injuries, though authorities also said they couldn't complete sobriety tests because the driver was taken to a hospital.

Just to be clear, it's important not to let details like police looking into alcohol lead to hasty conclusions. Sometimes, authorities look into it after every crash just because their department requires them to. Sometimes, they look into alcohol and find it wasn't involved. And sometimes, their investigations show that alcohol was a factor.

But that's for the authorities to sort out. In the meantime, it's important to ensure their investigations aren't so limited in their scope. Getting answers for the victims and families should be the priority, and that's not likely to happen with people jumping to all kinds of conclusions. That's why I wouldn't make any assumptions about what happened here without seeing clearer evidence than what authorities have released so far.
