Authorities said that the incident happened at around 5:45 p.m. along US Highway 82 near FM 898. Police believe the Nissan was going the wrong direction when it crashed into the Hyundai.

Heslet's injuries were said to be incapacitating while Schofield was said to have less serious injuries. No one else appeared to be hurt. Additional details about the crash have not been confirmed at this time.

Any crash where a vehicle may have been on the wrong side of the road is going to raise some red flags. But something not everyone considers is the role that factors beyond a driver's control can play in such incidents.

For example, here in Dallas, several years ago, a new toll road saw an oddly significant number of wrong-way collisions. TxDOT investigated, and they found the signs installed on the ramps warning drivers they were going the wrong way were too high and therefore difficult to see. They lowered the signs, and the number of wrong-way collisions dramatically declined.

I'm not saying that happened here or anything like that, but it's helpful to remind people that jumping to conclusions isn't going to do anyone any good. It's best to let the evidence speak for itself, and there still seems to be unanswered questions here.
