Christopher Martin, Karlye Bayer Injured in Truck Accident in Buna, TX

Buna, TX -- March 8, 2023, Christopher Martin and Karlye Bayer were injured after an accident where a truck side-swiped a trailer.

According to initial reports from the Department of Public Safety, the incident happened in Jasper County in the Buna area along the 1800 block of FM 1004. It appears that 70-year-old Christopher Martin was on a lowboy trailer "partially on the roadway" unloading trash cans. A Toyota Tacoma passing the trailer crashed into it, sending objects into oncoming lanes. There, a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Karlye Bayer hit the debris.

Both Martin and Bayer were taken to hospitals following the crash. It's unclear if anyone else was hurt. Right now, additional details about the crash are unavailable.

During daylight hours, one would think that a large work truck and trailer would be pretty easy to avoid. But when reports say a vehicle was "partially in the roadway," that warrants attention. It's entirely possible that vehicle was clearly visible, well within its legal rights to be where it was, and wasn't a danger to traffic. In other situations, though, work trucks may stop somewhere that's more convenient than it is safe. Is this one of those times, or does this all just come down to something like distracted driving? Perhaps authorities will be able to shed more light on this situation in the coming days.
