Investigators were called to the area south of Deary along State Highway 3. For reasons unclear at this time, a log truck going southbound on the highway somehow lost control. It left then returned to the road where it crashed into an oncoming Chevy truck.

It's no surprise to see there were winter conditions on the road this time of year, and maybe that was a contributing factor here. But considering professional drivers in South Dakota should be well aware of how to safely drive on snow and ice, I highly doubt this all was just due to the weather. So what else could have gone wrong?

Was the driver going at unsafe speeds? Did they leave their lane while looking at their phone, then lose control while attempting to jerk the wheel back to their lane? Was this brake failure, either due to some unusual defect or mismanagement of the brakes in a hilly area? Could it be there were extenuating circumstances relating to road design or some third driver that left the scene?

Some of these possibilities are pretty common, and others are less so. The thing they share in common, though, is that they're worth attention. When people need help after a serious wreck, one of the most vital tools they can have is evidence. Whether or not authorities here are taking ample steps to get that evidence remains to be seen.
