Randall Ball, Latisha Beck Killed, 1 Injured in Truck Accident on I-40 in Knoxville, TN

UPDATE (March 1, 2023): Further details from authorities identify victims killed in the crash. They were 58-year-old Randall Ball and 56-year-old Latisha Beck.

Knoxville, TN -- February 27, 2023, one person was killed and one was injured after an accident where a truck and an SUV crashed on I-40.

Authorities said they were called to the scene near I-40 and Midway Road, near the Knox County/Sevier County line, at around 7:00 a.m.

It appears that a Chevy truck was going eastbound along the interstate when it somehow lost control. This caused the truck to careen across the median where it crashed with an oncoming SUV.

Due to the collision, the driver of the SUV succumbed to fatal injuries. The truck driver had injuries considered life-threatening. No further information about the crash can be confirmed at this time.

When someone loses control badly enough they run across a whole median, my concern is there could be a lot more to the situation than something simple like distracted driving. Maybe they fell asleep at the wheel, had a tire blowout, experienced a medical emergency, or even had some kind of vehicle defect they didn't know about.

Sorting through all that is complex, to say the least, and frankly the authorities don't always prioritize accident reconstruction highly enough to handle that on their own. My hope is local authorities here understand the importance of getting the victims and families involved the answers they deserve sooner rather than later.
