Christian Ray Contreras Injured in Semi-Truck Accident on FM 88 in Hidalgo County, TX

UPDATE (March 6, 2023): Recent public information given by authorities identifies the man hurt in the crash as 23-year-old Christian Ray Contreras. Additional details about the accident are unconfirmed at this time, but authorities say they are still considering that the truck driver failed to yield leading up to the collision.

Hidalgo County, TX -- February 20, 2023, one person was injured due to an accident where a semi-truck and a pickup crashed on FM 88.

Investigators said that the incident happened at around 11:45 a.m. along FM 88 at the intersection of FM 490 near Elsa.

Authorities said that a Chevy Silverado was northbound on FM 88 at the time crossing FM 490. At the intersection, police say that a westbound semi-truck failed to yield, and the two vehicles crashed.

Due to the collision, the driver of the pickup was taken to a hospital via helicopter. No other injuries were confirmed.

I looked up some images of this intersection, and if what I'm seeing is the right crossing and is up to date, how in the world did this crash happen? Traffic on FM 490 seems to clearly have stop signs while north and southbound traffic does not. This happened just before noon, and authorities didn't mention any kind of inclement weather conditions. Any responsible driver should have no problem seeing cross traffic here. A potentially professional driver in a large truck is held to an even higher standard in that regard. So what happened here?

Could this be as simple as a driver not looking both ways? Were they on their phone? Have they been in similar accidents before? Is this a work-related incident like one I handled a while back where a truck driver was required to text his supervisor, causing him to take his eyes of the road frequently? Is this something highly unusual like a mechanical issue or a defect with the intersection itself? Likely or not, someone was seriously injured here. Any possible factor is worth considering here if it means getting people the answers they need.
