Both 59-year-old Roberto Newman and 63-year-old John Jarchow were walking at the time. While doing so, police believe that a driver hit them, then left the scene. Authorities have since arrested that driver and say charges for failure to stop and render aid and aggravated assault are pending. Both Newman and Jarchow sustained serious injuries. No further information can be confirmed at this time.

One thing that remains unclear is a suspected motive for why the driver fled the scene, if that is indeed what happened. It's not always as simple as someone just panicking. Oftentimes, they're drunk driving, have drugs, are hiding from warrants, or otherwise have something specific that makes them wary of a police interaction. I know if I was sent to the ICU in an accident like this, I'd want to know what that driver thought was more important than my life.
