Atkinson had incapacitating injuries due to the crash. No other injuries were reported. At this time, no further information is available. One thing I'm wondering, though, is just where exactly police got their information from.

When I see someone had significant injuries after a crash, there's some concern about whether or not they were able to tell their side of the story to authorities. Sometimes, the victim is taken from the scene before authorities can speak to them. If an officer doesn't later follow up, they may base their reports on accounts other than the person hurt in the crash. Whatever leads to an accident, that's hardly telling the whole story. Hopefully authorities were more thorough here to make sure the victim had their input, as well.
