Cathy Sides Injured in Car Accident on FM 51 in Decatur, TX

Decatur, TX — August 26, 2022, 62-year-old Cathy Sides was injured in a traffic accident on Farm to Market Road 51 in Wise County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 7:35 a.m. on the 3200 block of FM 51 near Murvil Street. Preliminary investigation suggests Sides was driving a Cadillac ATS south on the roadway when she started to make a left turn into a private drive. Investigators allege she failed to yield to a northbound Lincoln SUV which hit the Cadillac's passenger side.

Sides received serious injuries in the collision. The Lincoln driver sustained minor injuries.

I have no particular reason to argue with what police said happened here, but even if they're right about the crash's circumstances I'm still a little puzzled by the injuries that followed. According to reports both drivers were buckled up and both vehicles had multiple airbag deployments, yet one person suffered "incapacitating" injuries and the other didn't. Why?

The answer to that could be simple: Relative vehicle size, shock absorption at the impact point, or even just dumb luck. However, in my experience there could also be more to it. If a fastened seat belt and multiple airbags weren't enough to prevent someone in a luxury vehicle with a reported 5-star safety rating from getting seriously hurt, why not? Did those features work as intended, or could something have gone wrong? Did those in charge of the investigation think to check—and did they know how to?
