Two Injured in Crash with 18-Wheeler on I-86 in Angelica, NY
Angelica, NY — January 30, 2023, two people were injured in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 86 in Allegany County.
Authorities say the incident happened shortly before 9:00 p.m. along I-86 in the Town of Angelica area. Preliminary investigation suggests a Kia Optima was westbound on the highway when the driver lost control for unconfirmed reasons. The car spun out and struck guardrails on both sides of the freeway; after it came to rest in the left lane it was struck by a westbound 18-wheeler.
Both the car's occupants were taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The truck driver was unhurt.
The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.
Over the years I've found that when preliminary reports have few clear details, people often try to fill in the blanks with speculation rather than wait for facts or evidence. I understand the urge to try and clarify a hazy picture, but as always I'd strongly discourage guesswork as the investigation continues. Currently any number of factors—some within the drivers' control, many others out of it—could have played parts, and all of them must be carefully evaluated to find the truth.
All else aside this accident sent two people to the hospital, and I'd say that's more than enough reason to thoroughly investigate not only what happened, but also how and why. The victims would likely appreciate more insights than they seemingly have so far, so even if the public never learns more authorities should make sure those two get the whole story.
