Richard Harris, Eugenio Perez Killed in Crash on FM 45 in San Saba County, TX

San Saba County, TX — January 27, 2023, 65-year-old Richard Harris and 52-year-old Eugenio Botello Perez died in a head-on collision on FM 45 in San Saba County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 4:05 p.m. on FM 45 near FM 2997, a few minutes outside Richland Springs. Preliminary investigation suggests Harris was driving a Dodge Ram pickup with an attached cargo trailer north as Perez drove a Chevy pickup south nearby on the other side. Investigators believe the Chevy went out of control for unknown reasons and crossed into the northbound lane, where it crashed with the Dodge. After the impact the trucks ran off the road in opposite directions and came to rest.

Harris and Perez were both fatally injured in the collision. Two passengers in the Dodge also suffered unspecified injuries.

No further information is currently available.

Police alleged one of the crash victims crossed over the center line, but their findings don't seem to include any thoughts on why that might have happened. I hope rather than jumping to any conclusions they instead carefully considered all the possibilities and searched for evidence of which one was correct. A lot of things can send a vehicle off-course, and while some may be in a driver's control many others—bad road conditions, vehicle malfunctions, or medical emergencies, just to name a few—aren't.

I'm not saying police were wrong about the basics, but I've seen too many on-site once-overs miss crucial details to believe they really got the whole story. Considering the terrible injuries caused by the accident, I think the victims and their loved ones deserve to know no stone was left unturned. Could another look connect some missing dots?
