Yurelys Hernandez Injured in Car Accident in Taylor, TX

Taylor, TX -- January 1, 2023, Yurelys Hernandez was injured due to an accident where two vehicles crashed, possibly due to alcohol.

Authorities said that the incident happened at around 4:21 a.m. along US Highway 79 near the intersection of FM 3349.

Initial details about the crash say that 36-year-old Yurelys Hernandez was in a GMC Acadia traveling eastbound on the highway. While doing so, her vehicle was hit head-on by a westbound Kia Forte. Authorities say that vehicle either went over the median or was on the wrong side of the road when the crash occurred.

Hernandez had incapacitating injuries due to the crash while others in her vehicle, including children, may have been injured, as well. Police say that the Kia driver had been drinking, but additional details have yet to be confirmed at this time.

To be rather blunt, it would not surprise me if evidence confirmed alcohol was a factor here. Whether it's careening across a median or driving on the wrong side of the road, alcohol is an all too common contributing factor—one that Texans have to deal with on a nearly daily basis. But while that may make an accident like this seem straight-forward, there can still be other factors investigators need to look into.

Where did that driver get their alcohol? Were they illegally over-served by a local business? Do they have a history of intoxicated driving? Would improved signage and lighting have helped to prevent this crash? Did everyone's seatbelts and airbags work properly? At the end of the day, the priority isn't finding someone to slap cuffs on. It's to ensure the right people are held accountable and to ensure the victims and families are getting the whole story.
