One Injured by Loose 18-Wheeler Spare Tire on I-45 in Corsicana, TX

Corsicana, TX — January 11, 2023, a 26-year-old man was seriously injured when his truck was hit by a big rig's loose spare tire on Interstate 45 in Corsicana.

Authorities say the incident happened around 9:35 p.m. on I-45 near mile marker 230. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was driving a Volvo semi-truck with an attached trailer south in the right lane of the highway a short distance behind and one lane to the left of another 18-wheeler. Investigators allege the front truck lost a spare tire for unknown reasons; the tire then hit the windshield and roof of the Volvo truck. The other big rig continued south without stopping.

The Volvo driver was seriously injured in the accident but managed to pull safely to a stop in the gore between the highway and an exit ramp.

No further information is currently available.

I think most people would readily agree that parts of a commercial truck don't just break loose for absolutely no reason. When those parts then cause chaos and injuries on the road, it's clearly important to find out exactly what happened and why.

Even if a spare tire is more of a contingency item and doesn't get regular use, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be carefully secured in place before a truck hits the road. I'm not accusing the driver of failing to do so in Corsicana, but the options are seemingly a) the tire wasn't strapped down appropriately before the trip began or b) the equipment securing it in place was insufficient or faulty. In either case it seems like someone should answer for the mayhem it created after it broke loose.

Of course the first person to ask about how and why this occurred would probably be the trucker who lost the tire, who unfortunately left the scene. Maybe they didn't realize the tire broke loose or maybe they just wanted to avoid consequences, but whatever their reasoning they should be located—if for no other reason than to hear their side of things. I just hope authorities found some actionable details to help them track that truck down.

In the end the main goal should be to answer all the lingering questions about what happened here and to get the victim the help he deserves. I hope authorities and possibly even the trucking company behind the victim will help make that happen.
