Jeremiah Rupel Killed in Crash with 18-Wheeler on Indiana 22 in Grant County
Grant County, IN — January 26, 2023, 41-year-old Jeremiah Rupel died in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on State Road 22 in Grant County.
Authorities say the incident happened Thursday along SR 22 near County Road 500 East. Preliminary investigation suggests Rupel was driving a Ford Focus west on the road when the car crossed over the center line for unknown reasons. After entering the oncoming lane it collided head-on with a Freightliner semi-truck.
Rupel was fatally injured in the collision. No other injuries were reported.
The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.
With a crossover wreck like this it's crucial not to take anything for granted and investigate carefully. I've learned time and again over the years that things aren't always as straightforward as they may first seem, even in situations where preliminary reports seem pretty clear.
Take for example a case I handled not long ago: Much like in Grant County, police said a man crossed over the center line and crashed with an 18-wheeler. Accident reconstruction specialists took another look, though, and found that the officer in charge of the investigation got the facts wrong.

Evidence gathered by the specialists showed the truck actually drifted left of center first when its driver fell asleep. The victim steered into the opposite lane to avoid it, but the truck hit the rumble strips and the driver woke up. He steered back on-course but again headed right toward the victim, who couldn't avoid the truck a second time. The officer found both vehicles in the truck's lane when he got there and just assumed the victim crossed over first.
That situation was pretty unique and I'm not saying things happened that way in Grant County, but because it's possible that there's more to the story it's important to be sure all the details and facts are accounted for. The victim's loved ones deserve no less than the whole story, so I hope that's exactly what authorities bring them before all is said and done.
