Pedestrian Killed by Greyhound Bus on Elm Street in Dallas, TX

Dallas, TX — January 27, 2023, a female pedestrian was struck and killed by a Greyhound bus on Elm Street in downtown Dallas.

Authorities say the incident happened early Friday morning near Elm and Lamar streets, close to the downtown bus station. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was crossing the street, in a marked crosswalk with an active "walk" signal, when the passenger bus turned left from Lamar onto Elm and hit her. The impact knocked her to the ground, after which the bus's rear tandem tire ran her over.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

No further information is currently available.

I have no particular reason to doubt how investigators say things happened, but part of me wonders if that's really the whole story. The area near Elm and Austin is a pretty dense urban environment with many lights and plenty of foot traffic at all hours. It seems like few people would know that better that someone whose job is to drive back and forth through it all the time, so while I believe it's possible the driver couldn't see the victim—in a designated crossing area with a protected light, no less—I think it would be best to clarify precisely why not.

To be clear, I don't know more than public information says and I'm not making accusations. I just doubt I'm alone in wondering whether any more details will be shared about how a woman's life ended, or if the press has already moved on to something else as they so often do. The people who will miss that woman deserve the whole story, so whether or not it appears in the news I hope authorities will get it for them.
