Teen Driver Injured in Rollover Crash on FM 2728 in Kaufman County, TX
Kaufman County, TX — November 23, 2022, an 18-year-old male was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on FM 2728 in Kaufman County.
Authorities say the incident happened around 6:55 a.m. on Farm to Market Road 2728 near county Road 246. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup north on the roadway, which investigators say was wet from recent rainfall. The driver entered a curve at alleged unsafe speeds and slid off into the east barrow ditch. The pickup rolled over one or more times before coming to rest upright.
The young driver was seriously injured in the crash. Investigators alleged he might have been under the influence of alcohol and collected blood specimens for testing.

People often latch onto a few terms in preliminary reports and use them to jump to conclusions; among those are "single-vehicle," "unsafe speed," "alcohol," and "teenager." Unfortunately this accident seems to include all of those, which may have led some folks to quickly decide who and what were to blame. As always, though, it's important to investigate carefully and make sure only the facts tell the story.
Obviously any suggestion of drunk driving is one to take seriously, particularly if the driver is underage. Even if blood tests prove that theory true, however, there may be more to it—like where the alcohol came from that night. With just a few exceptions anyone providing drinks to someone under 21 may have some answering to do purely for that act, to say nothing of the unfortunate crash that followed. Moreover, if that "anyone" was a licensed business turning a blind eye to underage customers that practice must be shut down as quickly as possible.
To be clear, I don't know any more than reports say about this accident. Is it possible it can be chalked up to some mistakes made by a young adult? Maybe. Is that so certain that there's no need for further investigation? I doubt it. That teen was seriously injured and that's more than enough reason to learn the whole story of how and why. I just hope authorities took the time and care to make sure all the lingering questions were answered.
