Maritza Ruiz Injured in Truck Accident in Finney County, KS

Finney County, KS -- January 18, 2023, Maritza Ruiz was injured due to an accident where two commercial trucks collided.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash took place at around 8:25 a.m. at a rest stop along Highway 156 approximately 21 miles outside of Garden City.

According to officials, 27-year-old Maritza Ruiz was in a semi-truck with a livestock trailer which was going westbound along the highway. Passing the rest stop, it's alleged that another semi-truck which also had livestock failed to yield coming out of the rest area. Doing so, the two semis collided.

Ruiz had injuries described as potentially serious following the wreck. The other driver did not appear to be injured. Right now, details about possible charges or citations are unavailable. Generally speaking, it isn't surprising when authorities see fit to punish someone who they believe failed to yield. The fact it seriously injured someone only makes that more likely.

I think most everyone can agree that someone failing to yield at a stop sign is a serious mistake worth consequences, but the fact this may have been a supposedly trained professional responsible for multi-ton equipment only makes those possible repercussions more crucial.

The slightest mistake in a commercial vehicle can get people killed. While that thankfully didn't happen here (according to most recent information) serious injuries can be life-altering. They can ruin someone's ability to live without constant pain, to play with their kids, to go to work like they used to, or to do simple tasks like cooking or driving to the store. In the worst cases, they can permanently impair victims such that they need medical care for the rest of their lives. The toll that takes on a victim's well-being is bad enough before factoring in the burden it can put on a family's finances and their mental health.

I sincerely hope the serious injuries mentioned in these reports are the kind the victim will be able to recover from in due time, but these are the possibilities people need to keep in mind after reading stories like this one. Calling for appropriate consequences isn't just about wanting police to arrest and charge someone. Rather, it's about considering the necessary steps toward getting a family the closure they deserve and the help they need during a time of indescribable hardship. As such, I'm curious to see if there will be updates on what steps authorities are taking here to bring to light and to adequately address the mistakes that nearly cost a woman her life.
