Vincent Smith Killed in Rollover Accident on Interstate 10 in Boerne, TX

UPDATE (January 20, 2023): Authorities have identified the victim of this accident as Vincent Smith.

Boerne, TX — January 15, 2023, a 29-year-old man died in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Interstate 10 in north Bexar County.

Authorities say the incident happened shortly before 10:00 p.m. on I-10 near Limestone Pass in Boerne. Preliminary investigation suggests the young man was driving on the highway at alleged high speeds when he lost control for unknown reasons. The car overturned and the driver was ejected onto the road.

The victim was pronounced dead while being taken to an area hospital.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

After a crash like this I've found it can be hard for some folks to keep an open mind and take preliminary reports with a grain or two of salt. They read what police say happened and assume they have good reason for believing what they do, but many would be surprised to learn how often their conclusions are just "gut feelings."

For example, seeing that the victim was ejected during the rollover I have a feeling officers will conclude he wasn't wearing a seat belt. I can't conclusively say that's wrong, but I've also learned from accident reconstructionists over the years that many drivers are blamed for not buckling up even though their seat belts just malfunctioned. The buckles uncouple, the pretensioner fails, or the belt just comes unbolted from its anchor points more often than people realize.

So is it possible this accident will ultimately have a simple explanation? Maybe. Is it just as possible that there's more to the story? Absolutely, which is why a full investigation is so important. A young man's life was cut short on I-10, and his family deserves to know they have the full story of how and why that happened. I hope before all is said and done that authorities deliver them some satisfactory answers.
