Tana Marie Johnson Killed in Truck Accident on I-94 in Stark County, ND
UPDATE (January 18, 2023): Recent statements have identified the woman killed in the accident as 50-year-old Tana Marie Johnson. Right now, additional details surrounding the crash are still under investigation at this time.
Stark County, ND -- January 16, 2023, a Dickinson woman was killed due to an accident where her vehicle crashed with a jackknifed crash.
Officials with the North Dakota Highway Patrol said that the incident happened along I-94 several miles east of Dickinson at around 1:25 a.m.
It appears that a 50-year-old Dickinson woman was in a vehicle traveling westbound along the interstate. Sometime before, a tractor-trailer ahead also traveling westbound was said to have jackknifed along the median, blocking the left lane. The Dickinson woman's vehicle then crashed into the trailer.
Due to the collision, the woman was killed in the crash. No other injuries were mentioned. Right now, additional details, including why the truck lost control, remains unclear.

A tractor-trailer jackknifing obviously raises concerns, as it's usually the result of a truck driver doing something wrong. However, there are many possibilities that a truck driver simply has no control over. It's important that investigators have the means to look into all of these possibilities so that the victims and families know they're getting the full story.
How fast was the truck going? What was weather like at the time? Does the truck have a camera? Have the truck's maintenance records been pulled? Did authorities preserve the truck's ECM data and the driver's hours of service logs and cell phone records? Did investigators have the right tools to look into something like an unforeseeable manufacturing defect? How much time passed between the truck jackknifing and the car hitting it? Was there enough time for the truck driver to put out flares? Were any other vehicles involved that left the scene?
Asking these questions is a prudent first step to ensuring as family can get some sense of closure during a time when they most need help getting back on their feet. I can only hope that authorities are working to get clearer answers for the victim's loved ones than what's currently in the news.
