Cyclist Hit, Injured by Box Truck on Sample Road in Coral Springs, FL
Coral Springs, FL — January 11, 2023, a woman on a bicycle was struck and seriously injured by a box truck on Sample Road in Coral Springs.
Authorities say the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Sample at Northwest 62nd Avenue. Preliminary investigation suggests a box truck driver had just completed a delivery in a nearby business complex and was turning onto the roadway when the truck hit the passing cyclist.
The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries to her legs.
The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.
The preliminary details of this accident seem a little puzzling to me; if they're accurate it seems like a commercial truck hit a bicycle in a seemingly well-trafficked urban area in broad daylight. That may be exactly how things happened, but it doesn't really explain how or why. Why wasn't the truck driver able to see and avoid the victim? Are there extenuating circumstances—blocked sightlines, vehicle malfunctions, etc—that meant the collision couldn't be avoided, or could this just be a matter of operator error, like inattention or speed?
To be very clear, I don't know more than reports say and I'm not making accusations. I just see that someone was seriously injured in a way that maybe didn't have to happen, so finding out why she ended up in a hospital that day deserves careful investigation. She deserves all the facts, so I hope authorities took the time and care needed to get them for her.
