New Braunfels, TX — November 5, 2022, 29-year-old Gabrielle Juarez-Torres was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Comal County.
Authorities say the incident happened around 3:15 a.m. on the 4300 block of I-35 South. Preliminary investigation suggests Juarez-Torres was driving a Honda Civic south on the highway when authorities allege she made a sharp left-hand turn for unknown reasons. The car pass through the southbound lanes and crashed head-on into the center median, then ricocheted back through the lanes and came to rest on the outside shoulder.
Juarez-Torres was seriously injured in the accident. No other injuries were reported.

As with any accident, it's important to keep an open mind and withhold judgment here until a full investigation is complete and all the facts are in. Folks may be tempted after reading officers' preliminary findings to say the injured driver was fatigued or under the influence, but considering all the ways a car can go out of control—mechanical malfunctions, blown tires, bad road or weather conditions, swerving to avoid another vehicle—it's important to account for all the possibilities before reaching any conclusions.
Am I saying this incident can't have a simple explanation? Of course not. However, could there be more to the story than police realized during a once-over at the scene? Absolutely. That happens far more often that people realize. At the end of the day, a woman was seriously injured and she deserves to know that was taken seriously and its true cause was learned. I just hope authorities gave her that reassurance.
