Man Injured in Semi-Truck, Motorcycle Accident on Bay Area Boulevard in Harris County, TX

Harris County, TX -- November 28, 2022, a man sustained injuries following an accident between his motorcycle and a semi-truck.

Investigators said that the crash happened off the corner of Bay Area Boulevard and Fairmont Parkway in the La Porte area.

At around 8:00 a.m., a 21-year-old man was on a motorcycle traveling northbound on Bay Area Boulevard. Ahead, a tractor-trailer reportedly pulled left to then make a wide-right turn into a private drive. As it did so, the motorcycle hit the side of the truck.

The motorcyclist sustained injuries said to be incapacitating. No one else appeared to be hurt. Police did not release additional details, but this information seems far from answering all the questions I have--questions I think others should be asking, too.

To put it bluntly, 9 times out of 10 when folks come to me about crashes where they hit a truck making a wide right turn, investigations show that the collision happened because the truck driver was making an unnecessarily dangerous maneuver. There are companies out there that would fire a driver for making a turn like this without having a co-worker flag down traffic. So what exactly are we missing here?

What was visibility like? Was the truck's turn signal on? How fast was the motorcyclist going? Have maneuvers like this caused problems before at this location or with the trucking company involved? I certainly can't say one way or the other what ultimately happened here, but experience tells me there's likely a lot more to this story authorities aren't addressing adequately.
