Schanda Roundtree Killed in Truck Accident in DeSoto Parish, LA

DeSoto Parish, LA -- January 3, 2023, Schanda Roundtree was killed following an accident where her truck crashed off the highway.

Investigations from Louisiana State Police said that the crash happened at around 9:30 p.m. along Highway 513 in the area of Oxford Cutoff road.

According to initial details, 52-year-old Schanda Roundtree of Nacogdoches was traveling northbound along the highway in an 18-wheeler. Somehow, the vehicle went off-road and crashed into a ditch.

Roundtree sustained ultimately fatal injuries. No one else appeared to be involved in the crash. Authorities haven't given any further information, and frankly I wonder if they're really giving the crash the attention it deserves.

I don’t want to speak out of turn, since I have no information about this crash beyond what’s in the news, but I’d like to take a moment and suggest that people avoid jumping to the conclusion that just because there was only one vehicle involved in this crash that means the driver must be to blame. I've seen all kinds of reasons for a crash like this to happen without the driver having any control over the situation. Yet time and time again, I have folks come to me with police reports that simply don't provide any clear answers.

What about tire blowouts? What about mechanical issues? Cargo shifts? Medical emergencies? Was the driver's employer forcing them to work long hours? Is there an employer making drivers use trucks that are in a state of disrepair? Did the truck have a defect that caused a survivable rollover to become deadly?

I just hope when all is said and done--whatever caused this wreck--it makes sense to the driver’s family and provides them with some measure of closure
