Juan Ubieta Killed in Auto-Pedestrian Accident on FM 529 in Harris County, TX

Harris County, TX — October 8, 2022, 52-year-old pedestrian Juan Ubieta was killed in a collision with two vehicles on FM 529 in Harris County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:45 p.m. on Farm to Market Road 529 near Ridgeberry Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests a Hyundai Tucson and an Infiniti Q50 sedan were headed east on the roadway when Ubieta reportedly tried to cross northward through the roadway, pushing a shopping cart.

Investigators allege Ubieta failed to yield to the vehicles and the Infiniti struck his cart. He dodged out of the car's way but entered the Hyundai's path and was struck. The Hyundai then fled the scene but its driver was returned a short time later by a family member and was arrested.

Ubieta was fatally injured in the accident. Investigators collected blood samples from him for testing as part of the investigation.

No further information is currently available.

In this line of work I've had to help many victims and families through some hard times following the accidents that hurt them or their loved ones. Time and again, the most pressing question they have is "How did this happen?" Simple as that may sound, answering it can sometimes get pretty complicated.

The incident in Harris County seems to be an example of that; if investigators had their details straight, it apparently involved a hit-and-run and possibly impairment (depending on what blood tests revealed). The runaway driver was returned to the scene and I'm glad to see they'll answer for their poor choices, but finding out what role if any alcohol played and who may be responsible for that is still an important issue to address. It seems only right that everyone responsible for the loss of a man's life be held accountable for their part.

It isn't my place to speculate about the reported details, nor to suggest I know more than investigators said. I just believe that this accident, like virtually all others, should get careful and thorough attention to ensure the whole story is learned. The people who lost a loved one deserve to understand how and why that happened, so I hope authorities were able to help with that.
