Makayla Cate, Angelina Lorieux Killed in Truck Accident on FM 32 in Canyon Lake, TX

Canyon Lake, TX — December 5, 2022, 28-year-old Makayla Cate and 32-year-old Angelina Lorieux died in a collision with a commercial truck in Comal County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 1:55 p.m. on Ranch to Market Road 32 at RM 484. Preliminary investigation suggests Makayla Cate was driving a Nissan Altima north on RM 484 when she approached the FM 32 intersection. Investigators allege she disregarded the flashing red light at the crossing and proceeded north, at which point the Nissan was hit on its driver's side by an eastbound Freightliner truck. The truck pushed the car northeast and then overturned on the north side of RM 32.

Cate and her passenger Angelina Lorieux were fatally injured in the crash. The truck driver was reportedly uninjured.

No further information is currently available.

I've heard it said that a commercial truck accident involves three investigations: One by the police, one by the trucking company, and--ideally at least--one on behalf of the victims and their families.

The police investigation is sometimes thought to be the best or only source of information, but that's not necessarily the case. That's not to say they don't help or their findings aren't relevant to understanding what happened, but they sometimes find fewer answers than one might hope for.

Likewise, trucking companies and their insurers may send out their own investigators depending on the alleged circumstances of an accident, but they'll mostly be looking for ways to exonerate themselves. They may be fully justified in that effort, but what they look for is unlikely to help the people hurt in the wreck or their families.

I'm not saying what did or didn't happen in Canyon Lake, nor can I predict how the investigation will proceed. I'm just pointing out that the people hurt by the wreck should have someone looking into it on their behalf. Victims' sides of things sometimes go untold, particularly if the only witness is the crash's other participant. It's only right that the people who lost loved ones have the whole story.
