Los Fresnos, TX -- December 19, 2022, Alfredo Escalante was killed due to an accident where his vehicle crashed into a canal.

Investigators reported that the crash happened at around 10:24 a.m. along FM 1575. It appears that 68-year-old Alfredo Escalante was in a vehicle traveling southbound on FM 1575. The vehicle somehow went off-road where it crashed into a dry canal. Due to the incident, Escalante was thrown from the vehicle. DPS claim he was no wearing a seatbelt. This and other details remain under investigation.

Something that people don't always consider in these situations is that they are preliminary even for the authorities. Here, they take this crash to speak about the importance of seatbelts. I don't disagree with that sentiment at all. But in the past, I've seen incidents where police said someone wasn't wearing a seatbelt only for more thorough investigations to prove otherwise.

Sometimes, things fail such that they render a seatbelt useless even when the victim did everything right. Is that common? Not relatively speaking, but it's a lot more common than folks may realize. That's why it's always important to consider who is looking into a deadly crash, what they're looking into, and whether or not they're getting a victim's loved ones the answers they deserve. I see no reason why this crash would be an exception to that.
