Crisanta Cazares Killed in Auto Accident on SH 123 in San Marcos, TX
San Marcos, TX — December 2, 2022, 58-year-old Crisanta Cazares died and two people were injured in a crash with a suspected DWI driver in San Marcos.
Authorities say the incident happened around 8:05 p.m. on the 3000 block of State Highway 123 at Clovis R. Barker Road. Preliminary investigation suggests a Chevrolet Silverado was headed east on Clovis Barker when the driver disregarded a stop sign at the TX-123 intersection. The pickup then veered off-course and crashed into the driver's side of a northbound Chevy Trax driven by Cazares. Both vehicles then ran off the highway into the nearby bar ditch.
Cazares was fatally injured in the collision. A 19-year-old man and an infant in the vehicle were seriously injured. Neither of the Silverado's occupants were hurt.
Police alleged the pickup driver admitted to drinking alcohol. Blood samples were collected for testing.

Commentary on Crisanta Cazares Accident in San Marcos
If blood tests confirm that the allegedly at-fault driver was impaired (as his reported confession would suggest), that may mean he'll have some legal consequences for his poor choices that evening. Drunk driving is a serious problem on Texas roads and it's only right that the people who do so are punished for putting people in danger. However, before anyone decides that's the end of the matter there may be other things to consider.
For instance, after alcohol-related crashes it's important to find out where the alcohol actually came from. Why? Because a local bar or other alcohol vendor might have illegally over-served the injured suspect before the crash. If so, that business might be liable for the injuries he and the other victim suffered under dram shop law. It would then have a duty to help both men get back on their feet.

Getting people the help they need and deserve is one reason of many why comprehensive investigations are so important. I can't say exactly what role alcohol played in this wreck, but since the driver reportedly admitted to drinking it seems like a good idea to find out where and how much. Unfortunately, police don't always make it a point to get those details. If an accident like this isn't followed up on by experienced independent investigators, there's no telling if the whole truth will be uncovered or if the victims and their families will get all the help they deserve.
