Commentary on David Hope Accident near Trapper Creek

It's not clear yet exactly what happened here, but the loss of a man's life under circumstances that don't appear to be his fault is more than enough reason to investigate carefully and thoroughly. Finding out why the methane tanker lost control in that curve is of paramount importance, as clear facts and abundant evidence are usually needed to ensure a trucking company takes responsibility for its employee's harmful actions--if the employee's carelessness was truly the cause. There are still questions about weather and road conditions, the methane truck's state of repair, and many other details to answer before any conclusions are reached.

Having said that, I can't help but wonder if police efforts alone will be enough to get those needed answers. That's not to insult them, just to acknowledge that competing priorities and limited resources mean sometimes they only scratch the surface of a wreck and let important details slip away. Incomplete or incorrect reports can be a major obstacle for people in search of answers or help down the line, which is why I often recommend that independent experts get involved on victims' and families' behalf. At the very least they deserve to know that nothing important was missed and that they have the whole story; anything else would depend on what that story turns out to be.
