Commentary on Adrian Love Accident in Harris County
Police say one driver's failure to yield caused this accident. I don't have any specific reason to doubt that, but I wonder if it's really the whole story. Sometimes the cause of a wreck and the cause of a victim's injuries aren't the same, so it's important to investigate carefully and find out if there were other factors behind the damage done.
For instance, it'd shock people to find out how many airbags deployed too late or not at all during wrecks. That's not even the worst they can do; a certain brand of airbag was installed in millions of vehicles before it was learned it could shoot metal shrapnel at people when it inflated. Moreover, forensic investigators have found some seatbelts never tightened or their buckles broke during a wreck, rendering a basic safety device useless.

I'm not saying anything broke or malfunctioned in Harris County, but I've seen it happen (and get completely overlooked) often enough that I wonder if someone should revisit this wreck and be sure nothing important slipped through the cracks. At the very least the victim deserves to know he has the whole story. Anything else would depend on what that story is.
